Are You Living The Dream?
Are You Living The Dream?
I know that’s a funny thing to ask. Everyone talks about “living the dream”. People leave their jobs so that they can “live the dream”. What is that dream? For some it’s independence from a “day job”. For others it’s the promise of financial freedom.
The trouble is that a few years after trying your hand at entrepreneurialism, you may have forgotten why you went down this route.
My husband and I married in 2004. At the time, before kids, before responsibility, we made a VERY conscious decision to call our own shots. We didn’t care about being millionaires. We wanted to have freedom to do what we want to do. We wanted to co-parent our kids. We wanted to travel. We wanted to move and live where we wanted to live.
We live our own version of our dream. It’s not everyone’s dream. We don’t own our home. {GASP!} But – we have been intentional in that decision because we embrace flexibility. We’ve lived in Hollywood, Seattle, and now Miami. We travel – for our jobs and for our selves – and often it’s a blur of both. Some times it appears “glamorous” but a lot of times it’s a little crazy. (Remind me to tell you about the time we had a sick baby in a hotel room that we all 4 shared in San Francisco when my husband was there presenting at a conference.)
But – regardless – it’s our “dream”. And, we’re living it. The good, the bad, the ugly. I can honestly say (and happily say) we are “living the dream”.
So – what’s the DREAM that YOU signed up for? Why did you leave the rat race? What is it that you’re working towards? Are you still working towards that dream?
The dream isn’t “some day”… it’s NOW! Are you living the dream TODAY?
This is such a great post Michelle. My “dream” is similar to your dream in that I want the freedom most. It has been interesting to see the changes and adjustments I make each year as my definition of “living the dream” changes and evolves.
Loved reading this. It made me realize I’m closer to my dream than I’ve ever been. Better late than never!
To me, “living the dream” would mean having a job that I love (even if its 9-5) that is flexible enough to spend time with my family, and comfy enough to own a home and be able to travel as a family. I don’t need to be a millionaire either. 🙂 I’m working on living the dream!!! Just need a job I love, a house, and kids. LOL!! But I am working hard to change career paths get get there. 🙂
