When A Goal Is No Longer Important

At the beginning of the year, I sat down to write four goals I’d like to accomplish in the short-term and long-term.  After about a month, I continued charging along with three of them.  But, I was stuck on the fourth.  Why was I not moving forward with the fourth?  Was I not spending enough time on it?  Was I flaking on it?  Was it too challenging?  Was I not committed enough to it?  (And – should I have been more committed?)

I came to realize that I simply wasn’t passionate about it.  And, I’ve come to realize that if there isn’t something motivating me to accomplish that goal, it simply isn’t going to happen.  If I’m not driven by the growth that it’ll bring then it’s not enough to keep me working towards it.

Naturally this made me question my tenacity.  It wasn’t a life-long dream type of goal.  It was more of a lifestyle goal.  But, I wondered if I had given up to easily.  After reflection, I realized, NOPE – I just simply didn’t care about it enough.

And, you know what?  It’s OK.  I’ve got bigger fish to fry.  This freed me up to spend more time on the things that I’m truly passionate about.

This has made me realize that passion is a key factor in realizing goals. Without passion, your goal ceases to be important.  I need to feel motivation towards:

  • a positive change in my life
  • additional income and/or prestige
  • happiness and/or betterment it will give me and/or others around me

When any of these is not apparent, and you aren’t fueling your passion, it’s time to move on… give yourself a goal you can really feel excited about.

Have you had this happen?  What did you do?
