Insider to Insider: Katie Webb & Meghan Schinderle, Owners of Intertwined

Katie and Meghan make up the dynamic duo of Intertwined, a wedding planning firm in Southern California.  These two ladies have an incredible partnership.  I know that finding a perfect partner for a business venture is a dream come true.  And, these gals are so fortunate to be living that dream.  They get to build off each other’s strengths and have a helluva fun doing it!  I dug through their blog and I really loved reading the first posts these ladies did.  It gave me a feel for the early days of this business in 2008.  I loved seeing how these gals built the company they have today… one step at a time (with a mission statement to boot!)  Thanks for sharing your story with us, Katie & Meghan!

Why did you start your business?

We love any excuse for an inspiration board, timeline and a good color-coded excel sheet! We kid! Well, that’s part of it – but actually, we first met as volunteers for ReCreation, a non-profit camp program for adults and children with developmental disabilities. After starting our own careers in corporate meeting planning and special events, we took on the awesome responsibility of directing ReCreation together during the summer of 2007. We had so much fun planning the camps and working together, we decided to make it a full-time job and ‘Intertwined’ our skills to plan beautiful events that celebrate the very best moments in life. We are blessed to do what we love with our best friend, every day.

What book do you recommend to new business owners?

We are huge fans of Delivering Happiness: A path to profits, passion and purpose by Tony Hsieh as we are firm believers in doing even simple tasks really well, always looking to be creative and above all, wow-ing our clients!

Do you have any cool goal-setting tips to share with us?

At the start of every year we create a list of the top 10-15 goals we want to reach together both professionally and personally for Intertwined. We both post that list at our workspaces and it is the greatest feeling in the world each time we are able to cross one of our major goals off the list. At the end of the year we see how many of the goals we were able to achieve and create the list for the next year! Katie also makes us this awesome collage of accomplishments which include beautiful words and pictures that capture all of our wins from the past year. We display this in our offices throughout the year to celebrate all that we have done.

What do you find to be the biggest challenge as a business owner?

We have to continually challenge ourselves to celebrate the little wins. We are so driven and are always challenging ourselves to reach higher, grow bigger, get to the next level, that we don’t stop to enjoy the now, the moment we have achieved the current goal and to look back at all we have done in such a short time, together.

If you were starting your business all over again, what would you have done differently?

We would have really focused on our brand image and what we wanted it to represent. If we look at our logo and branding from when we first began to where we are today, it’s a completely different company. We should have truly looked at our market and what type of audience we wanted to attract. Combined with that knowledge and the idea of what we wanted our company to stand for, we would have created branding from the very beginning that was strong, personal and attractive, then built out our company from there. We would also recommend really focusing on where you spend your money. A template website is fine to begin with. You don’t need to spend thousands on a famous graphic designer. Work within your means and build your company up from there.
