When I first heard of Elegant Event Sitters a couple years ago, my immediate thought was, “BRILLIANT!  Why didn’t I think of that?”  The company offers childcare solutions, including babysitting at weddings and events. Over the last few weeks I’ve been chatting with owner Tish and learning more about her.  I love how adventurous she is!  She’s been able to expand her business beyond her home state of Georgia to Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, and the Carolinas.  To me that shows that not only is Tish a risk-taker, but also she has some solid operations that she is able to replicate in other markets.  Tish, I’m excited to see where you go next!

Why did you start your business?

I started my business with a friend 6 years ago. As single moms, we understood the task of being invited to an event and trying to find a sitter just isn’t that easy.

What book do you recommend to other business owners?

Think Big by Donald Trump. This book really motivated me to stop thinking ‘local’ and to start thinking ‘National’. I felt like I was limited to Georgia because I live here but I realized that there are brides all over the country that would use my service so why not? With drive and determination there are no limitations.

What are your cool goal-setting tips?

When it comes to setting and accomplishing my goals, I really feel that focusing on a positive and successful outcome is key. Eliminate negative people who don’t support you and what you are trying to achieve.

What is your biggest challenge as a business owner?

My biggest challenge is employees. Before becoming self-employed I took for granted the employer-employee roles. I’ve learned that no matter how great my ideas and strategy are, if an employee doesn’t stick to their schedule or procedure then they put my reputation on the line and my business in jeopardy.

If you started your business all over again, what would you do differently?

I would probably have had more of a business plan on paper and not in my head. I spent a lot of time putting out fires and could have been using that energy to grow my business instead of trying to backpedal from mistakes. I am a total risk-taker but there are some times when you need to play it safe.

Thanks Tish!
