Insider to Insider: Eliana Baucicault, Owner of ellyB Events

eliana_baucicault_headshotA lot of planners say they are thorough, detailed, professional, and organized… unfortunately, this isn’t always the case.  Eliana, Owner of ellyB Events, is this and SOOOO much more.  WOW.  She has been helping us coordinate all of the details and logistics for The Simple Plan, Atlanta and I am beyond impressed.  Eliana says, “I have a strong belief that my clients need to focus on one thing and that is to have FUN.  Let us worry about where the forks need to be placed or what time the cake needs to be cut.”  In planning our Atlanta workshop, Kelly and I haven’t had to worry about ANY of the event details because Eliana has so seamlessly been able to do it for us.  She is take charge and trustworthy.  I can only imagine what a dream it’s like to have her for a wedding planner!  I might just have to get married all over again.  (If my husband only knew the things I’m scheming.)  Thanks for taking care of us, Eliana!

Why did you start your business?

Before starting the business, I was responsible for creating many successful events for family, friends and people in the industry. Many vendors would call me for ideas and would always encourage me to pursue producing events as a career. It is truly my passion. You have to love being an event planner since it is not as glamorous as it may seem. But definitely satisfying!

What book do you recommend to new business owners? Why?

My favorite book of all time is one that I had to read while obtaining my MBA – The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvement by Eliyahu M. Goldratt.  This book is written from a management point of view and shows you how a manager was able to turnaround a failing plant from the ground up. It shows you easy techniques on how to solve problems by using clouds, identifying bottlenecks, as well as preventing issues before it arises. B.E.S.T biz book ever.

Do you have any cool goal-setting tips to share with us?

At the beginning of each year I set a goal for a few things:

  • Three business professionals I would like to meet
  • Two to three conferences I will attend to further my education in the industry
  • I also set a goal for how many weddings I would like published and where

What do you find to be the biggest challenge as a business owner?

The biggest challenge as a small business owner is to decide where to allocate your funds. Whether it is advertising, education, or branding, managing your funds will make or break you as a small business. It is very easy to get caught up trying to follow where your competitors are advertising or if they have letterpress business cards and try to match that. Instead focus on advertising and marketing collateral that compliments your brand.

If you were starting your business all over again, what would you have done differently?

If I could start my business all over again I would get my Business Degree in Event Management. This is a new course that is just now being introduced in educational institutions. All businesses in the service industry would really benefit from taking a few management courses since it can teach you things such as managing your time, client expectations and finances.

Thanks Eliana!
