Ahhhh… 2010 is just a month away! Welcome to December. Instead of running around like crazy at the end of the month trying to pin down plans for our businesses in the new year, let’s take some time now to do this. This week we are going to define goals for 2010, use the SMART approach to enact those goals, and review some tips on achieving them.
Why Set Goals?
Goal-setting can be helpful in achieving challenging large projects and big dreams. As small business-owners we don’t always take the time to work on our business because we are often working so hard in our business. We all have aspirations for ourselves and our company. Take a few minutes this week to sit down and work on your goals for 2010.
Define Your Goals
So this is how we’re going to do this… take out a sheet of paper or open a document/spreadsheet on your computer… and make a list of 1 to 5…
Write 5 things you want to accomplish in 2010. These are your 2010 Goals. Be realistic with yourself. If you know that one of these goals could take a few years to unfold, then start a 5 year goal list. Describe each goal in detail.
Why only 5 goals? I have 20.
I find it VERY important to prioritize things to ensure that things happen. Sometimes we have 100 things on our to-do list and have a hard time choosing which one is most important and most urgent. 5 is a very achievable number of big goals for one year. If you want to make a list of 10, go for it. But, pick your TOP 5 that you REALLY REALLY want to do in 2010.
Come back tomorrow… we’ll break down these goals using the SMART goal-setting approach.
