this is so true! when i first started my "business" if you could even call it back then, i was all over the place, making all kinds of things. looking back on it, i was more just in it for the creative outlet than the business part. once i get serious about it and narrowed down my craft to just wedding garters and being the best garter maker than i can be, things have been so much easier and more focused!

This is a great post, Michelle. Years 3 and 4 of business, I moved away from gay weddings towards nonprofit and corporate events, and nontraditional straight weddings - but it burnt me out. When my biggest contract expired and the nonprofit did not renew because of the economy, I put all of my energy back towards gay weddings and it's been AMAZING.

You are soooo right. I still slip sometime - but not often. Wish you were around when I started.

This is a great article on staying true to your business. I must confess that I have taken on work that was outside of my specialty more times that I can say (I call see all your heads shaking in agreement!). This year I decided to pursue my passion to be a custom wedding dress and evening gown designer so I am keenly aware of avoiding going outside my niche to "help" people. I have been more disciplined about staying true to my pricing and turning down work that is outside of my specialty. I have found that when I have faith to turn down those other requests, an opportunity presents itself to do what I really love. Thanks to the Sage Pros for providing this invaluable piece of business advice!
